It only reduces a certain amount of damage (evidently 7 hearts), if you're getting hit by anything that deals less than 7 hearts, you won't take any damage and just lose rupees. But it's because those puzzles are now split that the dungeons aren't going to be as big as prior games. Personally i loved the dungeons in totk.
